125 year-old print magazines haven’t all come around to the digital age. At The Architectural Review, I had to fix the bugs and build features myself. That’s how I learned to write HTML and CSS, the foundational internet coding languages, and optimise sites for ranking on search engines (SEO).
But that’s just the technical side. Turns out websites are somewhat like buildings made with pixels. And just as architects like to sweat the details of door hinges and stair depths, I love web experiences that perform excellently and convey the character and personality of the person or brand they represent.
For this site, designed for a psychotherapist, my client and I worked together to convey her top-tier professional accreditations, and the grounded, creative approach of her practice. The new site gave my client the confidence to increase her hourly rate by 25%.
My process is deeply collaborative. I start by understanding the goals for the site (new leads and conversions, or better brand impact and reach) and the feeling and quality the client is after. Then I get to work on a graphic identity and site structure. Happily, renowned magazines are great homes for writing and editing. So I can also help my clients craft and hone their message to a print-ready standard, and help get the word out when they’re ready to launch.
